WhatsApp Risks - Chris King, IAPS CEO in conversation with Piers of Clayden Law

The Independent Schools’ Bursars Association (ISBA) recently provided Guidance for member schools on some of the GDPR, security and inclusivity risks which parent-led WhatsApp groups can present, and actions schools can take to mitigate these. Classlist is cited by ISBA as an example of an alternative platform parents can use to build a welcoming, inclusive community.

ISBA’s detailed advice is confidential to ISBA members, but Christopher King, CEO of IAPS (the largest association of independent schools in the world) sat down with Piers Clayden, partner with Clayden Law, to discuss the real-world implications schools face with parent WhatsApp groups. How serious could this really be for parents or schools?

The video covers:
0.00 - Background - why ISBA have issued a Guidance Note
1.00 - Three main risks with WhatsApp
1.49 - Summary of legal implications for schools
3.29 - Can Class Reps really have GDPR liability? Any examples?
